How to Draw a Fox

Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw a fox but felt a little intimidated by all those fluffy details? I know the feeling! When I first started drawing foxes, I remember getting stuck on their big bushy tails—it felt like no matter what I did, it looked more like a broom than a tail. But over time (and with lots of doodling in my sketchbook while sipping coffee), I found an easy, step-by-step way to break it down.

That’s exactly what I’m sharing with you today: a simple and fun fox drawing tutorial that anyone can follow. No fancy art tools required—just a pencil, some paper, and your imagination. By the end, you’ll have an adorable little fox that looks ready to jump right off the page.

Why I Love Drawing Foxes

Foxes have always been one of my favorite animals to draw. They’re playful, clever, and full of personality—kind of like cats and dogs combined into one little mischief-maker. Whenever I sketch a fox, I feel like I’m capturing a bit of that wild forest magic.

And the best part? You don’t need to be a professional artist to make a cute fox drawing. Breaking it down into simple steps makes it totally doable. Trust me, if I can draw it (without making the tail look like a broom anymore!), you can too.

Step-by-Step Cute Fox Drawing Tutorial

These are the drawings I made myself—follow along with each red line as the new part to draw!

Step 1: Draw the Top of the Head

Begin by sketching a wide curved line, a bit like a hill.

Let the ends curve slightly downward—this will form the top outline of your fox’s head.

Step 2: Outline the Bottom of the Face

Now, draw the lower part of the fox’s head. Extend the line down on each side, then curve it around to connect in the middle. Add two small zigzag bumps on both sides to shape the fluffy cheeks.

Great job—your fox’s head outline is coming together!

Step 3: Add the Face Details

Inside the head shape, draw two small oval eyes. Then, in the center, add a rounded triangle for the nose. Beneath it, sketch a short curved line with two little hooks on each side to form a sweet smiling mouth.

Your fox already looks super cute!

Step 4: Draw the Face Pattern

Add two curved lines starting from the sides of the nose and sweeping outward to each side of the head. These lines will form the fox’s light-colored face markings, giving it that signature fox look.

It’s starting to look even more like a real fox now!

Step 5: Add the Ears

On top of the head, draw two big pointy ears. Each ear looks like a tall triangle with slightly curved sides. Place one on the left and one on the right to give your fox its cute alert look.

Nice work—your fox’s face is really taking shape!

Step 6: Add the Inner Ears

Inside each ear, draw a smaller triangle with curved sides to create the inner ear details. These shapes will make your fox’s ears look fluffy and more realistic.

Awesome—your fox’s face is now full of charm!

Step 7: Draw the Fluffy Neck

Under the head, sketch a tuft of fur by making a pointed, zigzag shape. This fluffy chest fur will make your fox look extra soft and cuddly.

Great job—your fox now has its signature furry chest!

Step 8: Draw the First Front Leg

From the fluffy chest, extend a long curved line downward, then curve it around at the bottom and bring it back up to form one front leg. This leg should look like a soft rectangle with rounded corners.

Nice work—your fox is starting to sit up!

Step 9: Draw the Body and Back Leg

From the side of the head, draw a long curved line going down and around to shape the fox’s back. Curve it inward at the bottom to form a bent back leg, ending with a small bump for the paw.

Great work—your fox now has a body to sit on!

Step 10: Add the Other Front Leg

Between the first front leg and the back paw, draw another curved line that reaches down and around. This will be the second front leg, helping the fox look like it’s sitting firmly on the ground.

Perfect—your fox is looking nice and balanced now!

Step 11: Add Paw Details

Draw two small curved lines—one across each front leg near the bottom. Then add another curved line on the back paw. These lines show where the fox’s fur color will change, making the paws stand out.

Looking great—your fox’s legs and paws look nice and defined now!

Step 12: Draw the Toes

Add three tiny curved lines at the bottom of each paw to show the fox’s toes. These little details make the paws look extra cute and playful.

Fantastic—your fox is really coming to life!

Step 13: Draw the Tail

From the back of the body, draw a big fluffy tail that curves upward and then back down. Make it wide and rounded at the end so it looks soft and bushy—just like a fox’s tail should be!

Wonderful—the tail really completes your fox’s shape!

Step 14: Add the Tail Pattern

Draw a zigzag line across the tip of the tail to mark the fluffy white section. This detail gives your fox’s tail its classic two-tone look.

Amazing—your fox now has its signature bushy tail pattern!

Step 15: Add Fun Background Details

Around your fox, draw a few simple shapes like little stars and leaves. These extra touches make the drawing look lively and playful, as if your fox is sitting outside enjoying nature.

So cute—your fox scene is almost complete!

Step 16: Color Your Fox

Finally, bring your fox to life with colors! Fill in the fur with a warm orange, leaving the cheeks, chest, and tip of the tail a creamy white. Color the paws and tips of the ears a darker brown, and add green to the leaves and yellow to the stars.

Wonderful job—you’ve just finished drawing an adorable fox!
