How to Draw a Duck

Ever looked at a blank sketchbook and wondered where to start with something as simple (and adorable) as a duck? You’re not alone — I used to feel the same way. That’s why I’m so excited to walk you through how to draw a duck in a way that’s fun, friendly, and totally beginner-proof.

As someone who’s been doodling since I could hold a pencil, I’ve found there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about drawing ducks. Maybe it’s the rubber duck from bathtime memories, or just the cheerful roundness of their shape — either way, they always make me smile.

So today, I’m sharing one of my favorite cute duck drawings with you. I created this simple tutorial with love (and a little splash of water!) to help you feel confident sketching your very own happy duck.

Whether you’re a kid, a teen, or a grown-up who’s rediscovering their creative spark, this step-by-step guide will help you create a duck that practically quacks off the page.

Step 1: Start with the Duck’s Head

Let’s begin by drawing a large, curved shape like an open circle to form the duck’s head. Leave a small gap at the bottom — this is where we’ll attach the body later.

Try to make your curve nice and round, like the top of a balloon.

This will be the base for your duck’s cute face!

Step 2: Draw the Beak

Now let’s give our duck a cute little beak! Inside the head shape, draw a rounded “wavy” shape near the bottom center — it should look a bit like a stretched-out “M” with soft curves.

Then, add a small curved line underneath to show the opening of the beak.

This simple touch instantly adds personality!

Step 3: Add the Eyes

Time to make your duck come to life! Draw two small oval shapes — one on each side of the beak — to create the eyes.

Keep them close to the beak for that extra cute, baby duck look.

These simple dots give your drawing tons of charm and personality!

Step 4: Draw the Body

Let’s give our duck a plump, floaty body! Starting from one side of the head, draw a big curve that swoops down and around, forming a soft, rounded shape.

Add a gentle wave at the top to suggest the tail.

Connect it back to the other side of the head — now your duck is starting to look like it’s ready to swim!

Step 5: Add the Wing

Let’s draw a cute little wing! Inside the duck’s body, draw an oval shape with a slight wave at the top right corner — like a small jellybean with a dip.

This gives the wing a soft, feathery look and makes your duck even more lovable.

Step 6: Add Splash and Hearts

Let’s bring this scene to life with some fun little extras! Draw a few water droplets splashing near the duck and a couple of small hearts floating around.

These simple shapes make the whole drawing feel playful and full of joy — like your duck is happily splashing in the bath!

Step 7: Add Color!

Time to bring your duck to life with color! Fill in the duck’s body with a cheerful yellow, use orange for the beak, and add a soft blue puddle underneath.

Don’t forget to color the hearts red and the splashes light blue.

Now your cute duck drawing is complete — doesn’t it look like it’s having the best day ever?
