Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw a whale without getting overwhelmed by complicated shapes and tiny details? If so, you’re in the right place. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to draw a whale step by step using simple lines and an easy-to-follow process that anyone can enjoy.
I have always loved drawing cute animals, especially ocean creatures. There is something calming about sketching a friendly whale with a happy little smile. Whenever I need a creative break from work, I often grab my iPad or sketchbook and start doodling simple characters like this one. Before I know it, I’ve spent an hour happily drawing and experimenting with new ideas.

By breaking the process into small steps, you can create an adorable whale even if you’re a complete beginner.

This tutorial is designed to be:

- Easy to follow
- Perfect for kids and adults
- Great for sketchbooks, journals, and doodles
- A relaxing creative activity for any day of the week
If you’re looking for an easy way to learn how to draw a whale, simply follow the steps below and take your time. Don’t worry about making every line perfect. Some of my favorite drawings started with a crooked line or two.

Step 1: Draw The Whale’s Back

Start by drawing a long curved line for the top of the whale’s body.
Let the line gently curve upward at the end to create the beginning of the tail.
Step 2: Draw The Whale’s Belly

Draw a large curved line from the left side of the body to create the whale’s round belly. Leave a small gap at the end where the tail will be added later.
Step 3: Add The Front Flipper

Draw a small U-shaped curve near the bottom of the whale’s body to create the front flipper.
Keep the shape rounded and slightly tilted for a cute look.
Step 4: Shape The Tail

Draw a long curved line from the bottom of the body toward the back of the whale. This line will form the lower part of the tail area.
Step 5: Draw The Tail Fin

Add a cute tail fin at the back of the whale using two rounded shapes. Keep the edges soft and slightly wavy to give the tail a playful look.
Step 6: Add A Happy Face

Draw two small oval eyes and a curved smile on the whale’s face.
Keeping the features simple will make your whale look extra cute and friendly.
Step 7: Draw The Whale’s Belly

Add a long curved line across the whale’s body to separate the belly from the upper body.
Let the line gently curve downward near the flipper and continue toward the tail.
Step 8: Add The Belly Stripes

Draw several curved lines across the whale’s belly. Follow the shape of the belly to create the classic grooves that make a whale look more realistic while keeping it cute.
Step 9: Add A Water Splash

Draw three teardrop-shaped water splashes on top of the whale’s head. Make the middle splash slightly larger than the two on the sides for a balanced look.
Step 10: Add Cute Background Details

Draw a few bubbles around the whale and add a small heart for extra charm. Vary the sizes of the bubbles to make the drawing feel playful and lively.
Step 11: Color Your Cute Whale

Bring your whale to life with color! Use a medium blue for the body, a lighter blue for the belly, bubbles, and water splash, and add soft pink cheeks and a pink heart for an extra adorable touch.
Your cute whale drawing is now complete!
Why I Love Drawing Cute Whales
Out of all ocean animals, whales are some of my favorites to draw. Their large rounded shapes naturally lend themselves to cute cartoon styles. Unlike some animals that require lots of detailed features, whales can be simplified into a few basic curves while still being instantly recognizable.
That’s one reason I created this whale drawing tutorial. I wanted something that felt relaxing and approachable, especially for beginners who may feel intimidated by more detailed drawings.
